No ISAPI filters installed after installing dotDefender:
Posted by Yarden Loumer on 13 November 2011 04:06 PM

ISAPI DLLs are divided into the following groups: ISAPI Extensions and ISAPI Filters, which are two different mechanisms to extend the IIS functionality. ISAPI Filters are native DLLs that intercept incoming HTTP requests and outgoing responses in IIS and modify data in real time as required.
A different dotDefender ISAPI Filter DLL is loaded as a Wildcard Application Mapping. If you remove the ISAPI Filter DLL at the "Wildcard Application Maps" level, as a result, dotDefender filtering will be interrupted.
Note: If you wish to verify this, we strongly recommend attempting to do so at a test server only.

The issue:

No ISAPI filters installed (even if installation went “ok”).

The reason:

The installer did not stop the IIS service (or its dependencies) properly.

The solution:

- Back up important files, if needed – "Applicure" directory and Registry keys.

- (For v4.x): Go to the "Export/Import" section and click "Export" to save and export settings.

- Stop the dotDefender's services.

- {It is recommended to stop the IIS service at this point.}

- Uninstall the software.

- Purge all related files/keys in the Registry (Start -> Run -> "regedit")

Search "applicure" and "dotDefender" for that.

Make sure the directory "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Applicure" is gone.

(This may take some time..)

- Make sure no ISAPI filters, extensions/Module or services exist (Remove if they do).

- Make sure no "dotDefender" virtual directory exists. (Remove if it does).

- Remove the folder "$:\Program Files\Applicure\"

- Make sure the IIS service is {still} stopped!

- After you stopped IIS service - Reinstall dotDefender.

- Place the "license.dat" file under the "etc" directory.

- (Create a virtual directory if needed!).

- Restart IIS (again) and the dotDefender services.

- (For v4.x): Go to the "Export/Import" section and click "Import" to import the file you have saved.
